Let’s Build What’s Next, Together.
FAQ
SUPERWOOD is the first wood that exceeds the strength of steel. We make it by starting with regular wood and make it 5-20x stronger by using a high pressure process to squeeze out all the air and imperfections, and bring the cellulose fibers together to form hydrogen bonds. All while preserving wood's natural beauty, warmth, and sustainability. SUPERWOOD offers significantly improved durability and performance compared to conventional wood products.
Unlike typical engineered wood products, which just rearrange wood pieces (like veneers or chips) and bind them with glue for consistency, SUPERWOOD actually enhances the wood's inherent strength. Our patented process compresses wood fibers together, eliminating defects and creating a network of hydrogen bonds that harnesses the natural strength of cellulose nanofibers without synthetic resins. This molecular-level restructuring preserves wood's natural beauty while dramatically improving its structural performance. Our technology is protected by 144 filed patents, with 41 granted and allowed.
SUPERWOOD will be available beginning Summer 2025. SUPERWOOD Interiors will launch first, followed by SUPERWOOD Exteriors in Fall 2025. Initial production at our Frederick, Maryland facility will support up to 1 million square feet annually.
SUPERWOOD provides a Class A fire rating according to ASTM E84 standards, making it highly suitable for construction in fire-prone regions. The material meets rigorous fire resistance requirements and will be pursuing listing in the California State Fire Marshal's Building Materials Listing (BML) Program for Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI) areas later this year. This certification is specifically for products used in fire hazard severity zones where urban development meets wildland areas. SUPERWOOD's fire-resistant and self-extinguishing properties help slow fire spread and protect structures, which may potentially offer insurance advantages in these high-risk regions.
Yes, SUPERWOOD is engineered to deliver exceptional structural properties, with test results showing 5-20x the structural performance of traditional wood while maintaining workability. This makes it potentially suitable for various load-bearing applications, including integration into CLT, Glulam, or veneer-laminated systems. However, we always recommend consulting with a qualified structural engineering firm to verify the material is appropriate for your specific structural application. Engineering approval should be obtained prior to using SUPERWOOD in any structural capacity to ensure compliance with applicable building codes and safety requirements.
Yes, SUPERWOOD accepts most standard wood finishes including paints, stains, and clear coats. SUPERWOOD Interiors comes unfinished or with a refined finish for high-end applications.
SUPERWOOD Exteriors excel in extreme weather, with SUPERWOOD Exteriors specifically engineered to withstand nature's harshest conditions. It offers superior UV and weather resistance, minimal dimensional change, such as swelling and warping, and resistance to degradation. SUPERWOOD Exteriors maintain its integrity through freeze-thaw cycles and temperature fluctuations, making it ideal for applications from tropical humidity to desert heat to arctic cold.
Initially, SUPERWOOD is competitively priced against premium hardwoods, positioned as a high-end, sustainable material. As our production scales up to over 30 million square feet annually, we anticipate achieving cost parity with conventional building materials such as steel.
SUPERWOOD can be installed using standard woodworking tools and techniques. It can be cut, drilled, and fastened like premium hardwoods, though its density may require slightly modified techniques for optimal results. Detailed installation guides will be provided with purchased products.
SUPERWOOD requires minimal maintenance compared to conventional wood. For exterior applications, periodic cleaning or refinishing is recommended but no special treatments, sealants, or preservatives are necessary. The material naturally resists fading, warping, and degradation.
Sample kits will be available for purchase soon, with pricing information and details about how and when to order coming in the next few weeks.
SUPERWOOD is not available for purchase just yet, but we anticipate SUPERWOOD Interiors to become available this summer followed by SUPERWOOD Exteriors in Fall 2025. When we do launch, orders will be able to be made directly from InventWood through our website or through select distributors.
